What is IELTS?

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System and is considered as the leading and authentic test across the world to measure English language proficiency of individuals who wish to migrate, work or study in a country where English is the native language such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and USA. 

The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English jointly own IELTS. Any person’s ability across four language skills viz., reading, writing, listening and speaking are comprehensively evaluated through the IELTS test and grading is done on a scale of 1-9 in each of the skills. You can opt for IELTS Academic or General Training test according to your future plans.

Timing: 10:00 am to 9:00 pm

Exam Pattern

IELTS proficiency test contains four sections:

Listening – 30 minutes with 40 questions.

Reading – 60 minutes with 40 questions.

Writing – 60 minutes with  two tasks.

Speaking – 11 to 14 minutes and is recorded.

Dr. Athar Mansoor

Dr. Athar is our lead faculty for IELTS preparation in Lahore and has himself scored overall 8 band in the IELTS including 8+ bands in listening and speaking. He has a vast academic and professional experience and lived and studied in Australia, Europe, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Singapore and USA.

He has been educated at Lahore University of Management Sciences, National University of Singapore, University of Sydney, Michigan State University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Harvard Kennedy School, INSEAD Business School and IDEA League Universities of Europe for postgraduate education.

Dr. Athar is a regular speaker at many international forums in East Asia and North America on topics of global and national importance. IELTS can be taken in two formats:

Academic Training: Academic IELTS is offered through test centres on paper or on computer and also online from home or other private location that has stable internet connection.

General Training: General Training IELTS can only be taken at a test centre on paper or on a computer. Trainers and staff at TRACS will guide you about the test best suited and the correct type for your aspirations.

The IELTS Academic test may be taken by those who intend to pursue their education in an English-speaking environment or an institution of higher learning. It can also be taken for professional registration purposes.

The IELTS General Training test may be taken by those who intend to study below degree level in an English-speaking school or college. It may also be taken for work experience or other employment training. Migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK also requires IELTS General Training test.

IELTS test registration is simple, easy and quick. Currently there are 1,600 test locations across 140 countries. You can find your nearest test centre at www.ielts.org or opt for taking test online. Subsequently, you can register online and pay online or download the application form, print, fill and submit it at the test centre of your choice with a copy of your valid identity document which you also need to produce on the day of your test. After you application is processed for paper or computer-delivered tests, the test centre sends an official email with the date and time of your test. You can also use the portal offered by the British Council to register for IELTS.

IELTS consists of four sections i.e., reading, writing, listening and speaking and the total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Reading, writing and listening section of IELTS test are completed on the same day while speaking section may be taken up to a week before or after the other sections.

  1. IELTS listening section spans over 30-minutes with 40 questions that you have to solve by listening to four separate audio recordings of native English speakers. Question types can be multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion, sentence completion. Listening sections are same for both the test formats.
  2. IELTS speaking section takes only about 11-14 minutes and is recorded. It is similar to an interview between a test taker and an examiner and is divided into three parts which fulfils a specific function in terms of interaction pattern, task input and test takers output. Speaking sections are same for both the test formats.
  3. IELTS writing section’s duration is 60 minutes for both Academic and General Training tests. For the both the test formats, there are two tasks to be completed with one question for each one of them. The nature of the tasks is however, different for both the test formats.
  4. IELTS reading section is spread over 60 minutes with 40 questions. For IELTS Academic test, there are three reading passages with a variety of questions using a number of task types. For IELTS General Training test, there are three sections. Section 1 may contain two to three short texts; section 2 comprises of two texts and section 3 has one long text.

Candidates who are computer-friendly must opt for computer-dellivered IELTS as it has several advantages:

  • Results can be previewed after 3 to 5 calendar days from the date of test
  • All sections completed on the same day
  • Centre-based exam but fewer test-takers in the room
  • No need to fill out answer sheets as in paper based IELTS
  • Word count is available for writing section
  • Time is saved as you can copy/paste the answers in reading section
  • No need to take your stationery (pencil, eraser, and sharpener) to the test centre
  • There are more test dates available for CB-IELTS than Paper Based IELTS

Currently, IELTS fee in Pakistan ranges between 57,400 to 63,800 depending on the test centre and whether you are taking paper-based or computer-delivered IELTS. Test can be taken at all major cities across Pakistan such as Lahore, Sialkot, Multan, Sargodha ,Faisalabad, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Mandi Baha ud Din , Burewala, Islamabad, Karachi, Hyderabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Abbottabad and Mirpur.
